In a nutshell: Cancer Research UK have published their new research in a supplement ot the British Journal of Cancer, which found more than 100,000 cancers – equivalent to one third of all those diagnosed in the UK each year – are being caused by smoking, unhealthy diets, alcohol and excess weight.

This study aims to quantify the public health impact of these inequalities by estimating the number of cancer-related deaths that would be avoidable if all patients were to have the same cancer survival as the most affluent patients.

Government announces new ‘Flexi-scope’ bowel screening test

In a nutshell: A 16-year clinical trial, co-funded by Cancer Research UK and published in the Lancet medical journal, revealed that 10,000 people each year will avoid bowel cancer as a result of including the Flexi-scope test into the national bowel screening programme. 

The government has confirmed that a £60 million investment will enable the test to be rolled out nationwide over the next four years.
