In a nutshell: Persistent non-attenders of a breast cancer screening programme were included in an invitation management initiative to try and improve uptake and coverage. A moderate (3.1%) increase in breast cancer screening uptake resulted from the phone calls and home visits with nervous attenders being reassured about the process. The initiative saw more women declining screening than were screened but the initiative did make it easier for women to request permanently withdrawal from the programme.

In a nutshell:The National Health Service (NHS) cancer plan for England was published in 2000, with the aim of improving the survival of patients with cancer. By contrast, a formal cancer strategy was not implemented in Wales until late 2006. National data on cancer patient survival in England and Wales up to 2007 thus offer the opportunity for a first formal assessment of the cancer plan in England, by comparing survival trends in England with those in Wales before, during, and after the implementation of the plan.

In a nutshell:The objective of this study was to investigate screening performance measures in the English screening units that began inviting women aged 65–70 between 1 April 2001 and 1 April 2004. We analysed results after each unit commenced inviting women aged 65–70. In addition, we analysed data from units that invited this age group for a second time between 1 April 2004 and 31 March 2007. Results for women aged 65–70 were compared to women aged 50–64 and 60–64. Average uptake was 72.8% for women aged 65–70 and 76.7% for women aged 50–64.
