In a nutshell: Seven phases were identified when implementing a successful cancer screening programme: before planning; planning; feasibility testing; piloting; scaling up from pilot to service; running a full-scale programme; sustainability. Evidence was gathered from the three European Union guidelines on quality assurance in cancer screening as well as other literature and experience presented in a workshop of a European Science Advisory Network for Health.

In a nutshell: Research suggests that women undergoing NHS breast cancer screening are being “misinformed” and are not told about the harms of over-diagnosis. Those running the NHS breast cancer screening programme have “stuck to” beliefs from 25 years ago about the benefit of mammograms and supply women with “astonishingly misleading” statistics on death rates, they added. They called for more honesty from the NHS programme.

In a nutshell: Breast cancer is found in one in three women between regular screenings, according to a new study. Researchers found that 2.91 per 1,000 women who had been given the all-clear at a screening were found to have been diagnosed with breast cancer before their next screening. The cancers are mostly picked up because the women start developing symptoms, such as a lump in the breast.
