In a nutshell: Research published in the Lancet Oncology says the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine Cervarix “offers excellent protection” against serious cell changes that lead to cervical cancer, particularly when given to young adolescent girls before they become sexually active.

Breast cancer awareness and barriers to symptomatic presentation among women from different ethnic groups in East London

In a nutshell: A population-based survey of 1515 women aged 30+ using the Cancer Research UK Breast Cancer Awareness Measure showed South Asian and black women had lower breast cancer awareness than white women. South Asian women, but not black women, reported more emotional barriers to seeking medical help than white women. White women were more likely than non-white women to report worry about wasting the doctor’s time as a barrier to symptomatic presentation.

In a nutshell: Research suggests people living in certain parts of the UK are three times more likely to die from bowel cancer. The worst in the UK is Glasgow, with 31 people per 100,000 dying per year from the disease, while the best is Rossendale, Lancashire, where there are 9 deaths per 100,000.
